The story of Vallerie
The founding story of the family is about a house. Publius Valerius, one of the first consuls after the kings were expelled, was suspected of wanting a crown himself because he was building on high ground above the forum; he had the work stopped, the house taken down and rebuilt at the foot of the hill where anyone could look into it, and he ordered the axes carried in front of him lowered whenever he addressed the assembly. The gesture earned him a surname meaning friend of the people, and his descendants kept it for five hundred years. Whether any of it happened is another matter, but the family made sure it was the story told about them.
