Our story of Valetta
In 1565 the Ottoman army besieged Malta for four months, and the Knights of St John under their Grand Master, Jean de la Valette, held out until relief came; the new fortified city the Knights built on the peninsula afterward was named Valletta in his honor. Valetta, the American name, most likely came from Val- and -etta, the fashionable pieces of its day. But it shares its sound with a city built to celebrate holding firm.
