Our story of Valeta
After the Ottoman siege of Malta in fifteen sixty-five failed, the Knights decided that the peninsula the Turks had used as a gun position needed to be a fortress city instead of bare rock. Jean de Valette laid the foundation stone the following year, at seventy-one, and the city was substantially built within about five years — on a grid, with a planned water supply and sewerage, which almost no European city of the period had. Engineers came from Italy, money came from every Catholic court in Europe, and the walls were designed to make another siege unwinnable. Valette died before it was finished and is buried in it. It is one of very few European capitals that was designed as a single project and built to the plan.

Valletta in Malta is named after a Grand Master of the Knights; the veleta is a round dance popular in the early twentieth century; and the name may equally be a build on a free front and an ending. All three fit the decades this name appears in.
Pronouncing Valeta

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The Maltese city is said with a short e and a doubled t, which makes it a noticeably different word.

Fashion outlook
Valeta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
- Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
- Valletta, Veleta and Valeda are all recorded and will be written for it.
- The middle vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
- Nothing records which of the three origins applies.
