The story of Unity
Unio in Latin meant oneness and also, oddly, a single pearl and an onion — Roman writers connect the last two by the idea of a single body made of layers. English took unity in the fourteenth century for the abstract quality. Puritan naming took it up as a virtue word in the seventeenth century, alongside Concord and Amity, and it appears in American records from then on in small numbers.
Meaning
oneness, being one
From Latin unitas, oneness, on unus, one; the same root gives unit, unify and unique. Onion is from the same word — the Latin unio named both a single large pearl and the layered bulb.

The Tram test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Unity's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tram climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tram's path sketches the road Unity is walking now.
Unity sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- The connection between unity and onion is a genuinely good fact.
- Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
- It is an abstract noun rather than a name, and strangers will remark on it.
- A virtue name sets an expectation the child did not choose.
- Five letters and three syllables, quick to write but hard to shorten.
