The story of Unique
English has a small tradition of naming children for virtues and conditions — Prudence, Constance, Verity, Mercy, Charity — and it is older than most people realize, going back to Puritan naming in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Unique belongs to that habit rather than to any other, though it comes from a very different moment in it: American naming from the late twentieth century onward, which reached past the Latin virtues into ordinary modern vocabulary. It has been given to boys and girls alike, with no strong lean in either direction.
Meaning
one of a kind; the only one
From Latin unicus, 'sole, single, only', from unus, 'one', through French unique. The word entered English in the seventeenth century and originally meant strictly singular rather than merely unusual — a sense careful writers still defend. The meaning is exact and not in dispute.

The Deo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Unique's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deo climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deo's path sketches the road Unique is walking now.
Unique sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
