The story of Tytus
Titus was among the commonest Roman first names, abbreviated to T. in inscriptions, and it was carried by an emperor who completed the Colosseum and by a companion of Paul to whom one of the New Testament letters is addressed. That letter kept the name in Christian use across Europe. Polish spells it Tytus, using y where Latin has i — a regular Polish convention — and the form reaches United States records with Polish families and, more recently, with American parents who prefer the look of it to the plain Titus.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Titus is a Roman praenomen — one of the small closed set of Latin first names — and its derivation is not established. A Sabine or Etruscan source is generally assumed, since several of the praenomina come from outside Latin. Readings connecting it to a word for honor or for a dove have been offered and neither is supported. The name is older than the records that would explain it.

TY-tus
Two syllables, stress on the first. Polish says TIH-toos, with a short first vowel and a full oo — the y in Polish is a short i sound, not the English long one. English speakers say it exactly as Titus.

About 1 boy in 1,792 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 39,723 for Tytus itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rohn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tytus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rohn climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rohn's path sketches the road Tytus is walking now.
Tytus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Ty is a ready short form with a strong independent American record.
- A genuinely ancient name with a documented classical and biblical presence.
- Two syllables and no pronunciation difficulty in English.
- Titus is the standard English spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
- Polish and English read the y quite differently, so the name shifts on crossing.
- Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so any gloss offered is a guess among several.
