Where it comes from

The story of Tyr

Tyr was a god of law and of single combat, and the story that survives about him is a good one: the gods bind the wolf Fenrir with a ribbon, and Tyr puts his hand in the wolf's mouth as a pledge of good faith, knowing what will happen. He loses the hand. Tuesday is Tyr's day, translating the Latin dies Martis, Mars' day. The name has been in Scandinavian use in small numbers and reaches United States records very recently, through interest in Norse mythology.

Meaning

god

Old Norse Tyr comes from Proto-Germanic Tiwaz, from an Indo-European root meaning the daylight sky and, by extension, a god. The same root gives Greek Zeus, Latin Iuppiter — from Dyeu-pater, sky-father — and Latin deus and divus. It is one of the clearest cognate chains in comparative linguistics, and the reading is documented and undisputed.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three letters, one syllable, and easy for a small child to write.
  • An exact meaning with one of the best-documented word-histories in any language.
  • Ty is a ready short form with a strong independent American record.
What to consider
  • The two pronunciations both circulate and neither is standard in American use.
  • It is the name of a god, which some families weigh differently than others.
  • Tyr, Tyr and Tiw all appear in writing about Norse mythology and look unrelated.
