Tuan
Masculine · “talented”
Tuan is Vietnamese, and most Vietnamese given names are Chinese in origin. A thousand years of Chinese rule left the language with a huge borrowed vocabulary, written in Chinese characters until the seventeenth century, and the name stock came with it: the great majority of Vietnamese personal names are Sino-Vietnamese words rather than native ones.

The story of Tuan
Vietnamese was written in Chinese characters, and then in an adapted character script, until Portuguese and French missionaries developed a Latin alphabet for it in the seventeenth century. That alphabet, with its diacritics for vowels and tones, became official only in the twentieth. The consequence for names is that a Vietnamese name arriving in an English-speaking country loses its tone marks at the border, and the tone is not decoration: it distinguishes words. A name written without them is genuinely ambiguous in a way the original is not. English-speaking systems have no way to carry them, so the loss is total and permanent, and it happens to every Vietnamese name in every American record.
Meaning
talented, handsome
The word is Sino-Vietnamese, from a Chinese character meaning outstanding or of superior talent, and it is used of a man. The reading is settled. Vietnamese writes it with a tone mark that English drops entirely, which changes the word: Vietnamese has six tones and removing the mark leaves a spelling that could be any of several different words.

Fashion outlook
Tuan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, strong and unproblematic for English speakers to say approximately.
- It is a genuine and common Vietnamese name with a documented meaning.
- The same letters are a respectful term of address in Malay, which is a pleasant coincidence.
- The tone mark cannot be carried by American systems, and the tone is part of the word.
- It will be heard as Tuwan or Twain by people not listening closely.
- The meaning describes a man, which is worth knowing before it is given to anybody else.
