Where it comes from

The story of Trystin

Wagner set the story as an opera, and the first thing the audience hears is a chord that does not belong to the harmonic system it is written in. It refuses to resolve where the ear expects; it slides somewhere else, and then does it again, and the whole opera is built out of that refusal. Music students have been taking it apart ever since, and there is still no agreement on what to call it. What is agreed is that a great deal of what came afterward in European music starts there, with one unresolved sound at the beginning of a story about two people who cannot have what they want. The name on the title page is this one, spelled the older way.

Not established

The older form of the name is Drustan, a Pictish name whose sense has not been recovered. French writers reshaped it toward their own word for sad, which is how the melancholy reading got attached, but that is a later fit rather than an etymology. The modern spelling adds nothing either way.

Trystin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 50 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Trystin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody is at a loss for how to say it.
  • It carries a documented literary and musical history stretching back many centuries.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Tristan and Tristen are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
  • The story attached to the name ends badly for everyone in it, which matters to some families and not to others.
