The story of Tristin
The oldest surviving versions are Anglo-Norman poems of the twelfth century, and they are self-contained: no Arthur, no Camelot, no grail. The story is about a man who fetches a bride for his uncle and drinks the wrong cup on the way home. Later French prose romances absorbed it wholesale into the Arthurian cycle, gave Tristan a seat at the table and a rivalry with Lancelot, and that is the version everyone inherited. Wagner then took the twelfth-century core back out again. This spelling changes the second vowel, which is unstressed and free, and the record shows it arriving in the nineteen-eighties.

noise, or tumult
The original Pictish or Brittonic name is generally read from a word about din or clamor. French scribes reshaped it toward their own word for sad, which is a folk etymology and has stuck to the name ever since.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Felipe test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tristin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Felipe climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Felipe's path sketches the road Tristin is walking now.
Tristin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is read correctly at sight by anyone who has met the commoner spelling.
- The story behind it is one of the oldest and most adapted in European literature.
- It has forms in French, Welsh, Spanish and German.
- Tristan is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
- The story attached to it ends badly for everyone in it, which some families will want to know.
- The spelling is recorded for a small number of girls, though it reads overwhelmingly as a boy's name.
