The story of Tristian
Tristan came into European literature through the medieval romances of Tristan and Iseult, and the name spread through Portugal and Spain as Tristão and Tristán. In 1506 the Portuguese captain Tristão da Cunha sighted a group of volcanic islands deep in the South Atlantic but could not land in the heavy seas; the main island still bears his name and is often called the most remote inhabited island in the world. In the United States the late twentieth century produced Tristian, a spelling that lays the -ian of Christian and Adrian over Tristan and gives it three syllables where the original has two.

The Elwyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tristian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elwyn climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elwyn's path sketches the road Tristian is walking now.
Tristian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Sounds close to Tristan, a name with centuries of literary history.
- Comes with Tris as a ready short form.
- Distinct from the more common spelling without being hard to read.
- Most people will write Tristan, so the extra i will need pointing out.
- The medieval story behind the name is a tragic one, which some families weigh.
- The spelling is recorded occasionally for girls, but it follows a man's name in every tradition, and a girl called Tristian would often be taken for a boy on paper.
