The story of Trista
The Tristan and Iseult romance is one of the great medieval stories, older than the Arthurian material it was later folded into, and it exists in French, German, Norse and English versions. Its hero's name came from Pictish Scotland and was reworked in the retelling. Feminines of Tristan are modern and American: Trista, Tristen, Tristyn. Trista appears in American records from the 1970s and peaked in the mid-1990s.
Meaningscholars disagree
sad
The oldest form is the Pictish Drustan, a diminutive of Drust, whose meaning is not recovered. Medieval French writers respelled it as Tristan under the influence of triste, 'sad', because the romance they were telling ends in grief. So the sadness is genuinely in the name — but it was put there by editors, not by etymology.
