Confucian ethics names five constant virtues, and Vietnamese has taken all five into its name stock: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and trustworthiness. They are given as personal names in the same way English once gave Faith, Hope and Charity, except that the set is older, more systematic and shared across the whole Sinitic cultural sphere — the same five appear as Chinese, Korean and Japanese given names in their own forms. A family choosing one is placing the child in a scheme rather than picking an attractive word, which is why siblings are sometimes given several of the five.
