The story of Trevis
Medieval roads were full of places where money changed hands: bridges, fords, ferries, town gates and boundaries between lordships. The man who took the payment at such a point was a traverser, and the surname Travis, Traves and Travers comes from that job, in the same way that Toll, Gate and Bridgeman do. It is one of a set of occupational names that record functions rather than crafts, alongside Bailey, Sergeant, Reeve, Constable and Hayward, and those names are a good index of how much of medieval life was administrative. The American given name comes from the surname and rose sharply in the 1970s and 1980s, at which point respellings such as Trevis and Travus began to appear.

Trevis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Isabel climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Isabel's path sketches the road Trevis is walking now.
