Treasure
Feminine · Greek roots · “Treasure”
Treasure is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 8,754 girls against 209 boys since 1880.
Treasure is an ordinary English word with an unusually well-traveled past: it reached us through Old French tresor from Latin thesaurus, and before that from Greek thēsauros, a storehouse. The same root gave English its thesaurus — a storehouse of words. Said aloud it has the soft middle consonant that pleasure and leisure share, which is rare in a given name.

The story of Treasure
The word itself is old and its path is well documented: Greek thēsauros into Latin thesaurus, then into Old French as tresor, and into English after the Norman conquest. As a given name it belongs to the English tradition of naming children after good things in plain speech — the same habit that produced Faith, Honor, Precious and Grace. It is also part of a living naming practice in English-speaking West Africa, particularly Nigeria, where names such as Blessing, Favour, Gift and Treasure are given in ordinary use, and it traveled to the United States along with that community. In American records it has been present for generations without ever crowding a classroom.
Meaning
Treasure; wealth stored up, a store or hoard
The Greek thēsauros meant a storehouse or the things kept in it; the sense of precious hoarded wealth came with it into Latin, French and English.

The Jenelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Treasure's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenelle climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenelle's path sketches the road Treasure is walking now.
Treasure sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled exactly like the everyday English word, so it almost never needs to be repeated, corrected or spelled out over the phone.
- Its meaning is plain to any English speaker — no explaining required, which is unusual for a name.
- A documented line back through French and Latin to Greek, where thēsauros meant a storehouse.
- Rare enough in American schools that it seldom needs a last-initial, while still being a completely familiar word.
- It is also a term of endearment in English, so a Treasure will hear the pun made — affectionately, and often. Some bearers enjoy it, some tire of it by adolescence.
- Word names carry their meaning openly, which can feel weighty on a résumé or a nameplate in a way that Anna or Claire does not. Worth saying the full adult version aloud with your surname.
- Short forms exist but none is well established, so nicknames will likely be invented at home rather than inherited.
