The story of Tray
The suffix system is specifically American. Britain uses Junior rarely and numerals almost never outside royalty; America built a whole convention, with Junior for a son named exactly after his father, the Second for a nephew or grandson, and numerals continuing as long as the line does. Nicknames follow: the third is Trey or Tripp, from the card and from triple, and the fourth is occasionally Quad or Ford. The practice grew in the nineteenth century, spread widely in the twentieth, and produced a name that started as a shorthand and became independent, so that a Trey today is usually not a third of anything. The word itself came from French with the card games and kept its meaning in dice and cards for six hundred years.
