Where it comes from

The story of Toshiko

Until well into the twentieth century, Japan counted age by a system in which a baby was one year old at birth and everybody in the country gained a year together on New Year's Day. A child born in December was two years old a few weeks later. The system was tidy, communal and completely indifferent to individual birthdays, and it was only displaced by law after the Second World War, though older people went on using it for decades. Traces survive in temple rituals and in the way certain anniversaries are reckoned. The romanization is its own tangle: Japan has had two official systems for writing the language in Latin letters, they disagree about several sounds, and American records generally follow neither one consistently.

child, with a first element that varies with the characters chosen

The ko at the end is the word for child in every version. The toshi in front is written with several different characters depending on the family, and each carries a different sense, so an American record preserving only the sound cannot fix the meaning.

Fashion outlook

Toshiko sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three open syllables with no sound that English lacks, so it survives the crossing intact.
  • Toshi is available as a short form and works in both languages.
  • It carries a documented naming tradition rather than a guessed-at etymology.
What to consider
  • In Japan the -ko ending now reads as belonging to an older generation, so the name lands differently there than here.
  • The characters that would fix the meaning are not recorded on an American certificate, so part of the name stays behind.
  • It draws questions about origin more often than most names, which some children enjoy and some do not.
