The story of Torre
Italy built its surnames late and locally, and the results are unusually transparent: Della Torre is from the tower, Monti is from the hills, Ponte is from the bridge, Chiesa is from the church. In a country of small towns where everybody knew where everybody lived, saying which house somebody came from was a perfectly good way of identifying them, and it became the family name when the parish registers needed one. English did the same thing six hundred years earlier and the words have worn down past recognition; Italian did it recently enough that the meanings are still sitting on the surface, which is why an Italian phone book reads like a description of a landscape.

Tower
As an Italian word it means a tower, and it opens a long list of surnames and place names. It is also a short form of Salvatore, which is a completely different name; Italian shortens that one from the back, leaving exactly these letters. Which a given family meant is not recoverable.

Fashion outlook
Torre sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete and understood across southern Europe.
- It is short and easy for an English speaker.
- It has a formal long name available behind it.
- Americans will say it as one syllable, which Italian speakers will correct.
- It leans to boys, but a real share of children with this spelling are girls, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
- Two unrelated origins mean no single meaning is his.
