The story of Toni
Antonius was one of the great houses of the Roman republic, and Christian Europe kept the name through Saint Anthony of Egypt and later Anthony of Padua. Feminines were built everywhere: Antonia, Antonina, Antoinette. Twentieth-century American families took the short forms directly, and Toni — spelled with an i to mark it feminine — peaked in the mid-1960s.

Not established
From the Roman family name Antonius, generally taken to be Etruscan and pre-Latin, with no recoverable meaning. The reading 'priceless' that circulates with the name comes from a later folk etymology connecting it to the Greek anthos, 'flower'; it is not supported.
