Tonette
Feminine · “beyond price”
A tonette is also a small plastic flute, issued to several generations of American schoolchildren as a first instrument before the recorder took over. That is a genuine collision rather than a joke: the instrument was patented in the nineteen thirties, sold in enormous numbers, and anybody who went through an American elementary school in the middle of the century will think of it first.

The story of Tonette
The instrument was designed as a teaching tool: cheap, unbreakable, easy to blow, with a fingering close enough to a real woodwind that a child moving on to clarinet or flute would not have to start over. Schools bought them by the crate. It was displaced by the plastic recorder in the nineteen sixties, largely because the recorder had actual repertoire attached to it, and the word has been quietly disappearing from the language since. The name is older than the instrument and unrelated to it, built in the ordinary American way from a shortened front and a French ending, and the two simply arrived at the same word. Which one an American hears first depends almost entirely on when they were at school.

beyond price
The name is built on the Roman clan name behind Anthony and Antonia, whose own meaning has never been established; the reading about being priceless is a Renaissance invention based on a false Greek connection. The -ette ending is a French diminutive with no independent sense. So the name is a small something-or-other, and the something-or-other is genuinely unknown.
How the name formed
- A Roman clan name of unknown meaning
- Antonia and Toni in English use
- A French diminutive ending added in America
- A plastic school flute arriving at the same word

Pronouncing Tonette
toh-NET
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is what the French ending does to whatever it lands on. The instrument is said exactly the same way, which is the whole difficulty.

Fashion outlook
Tonette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- Older Americans will hear a school instrument before they hear a name.
- It will be written Tonnette or Tonetta by people taking it from speech.
- There is no established meaning, and the pretty one usually given is a Renaissance invention.
