Tomekia builds on a man's familiar form with an ending that was widely available when it was made. The name at the front belongs to an apostle whose own name is a description rather than a name, and to the author — probably — of the most reprinted Christian book there is.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tomekia

After the Bible, the book most often printed in the Christian world is a short devotional manual written in a Dutch monastery in the early fifteenth century, and who wrote it has been argued about for six hundred years. The manuscript tradition attaches it to a canon usually known by his birthplace, a small town on the lower Rhine, and the earliest copies in his own hand survive. But rival claims were made almost immediately — for a French chancellor, for an Italian abbot two centuries earlier — and the dispute produced an entire scholarly literature, complete with forged colophons. The consensus now favors the Dutch canon. The irony is thick: the book's own argument is that a man should want to be unknown and thought of as nothing, and its authorship became one of the longest-running credit disputes in European letters.

The front is the short form of Thomas, which in Aramaic means a twin and was evidently a nickname before it was a name. The ending is a free American suffix with no content. Nothing records what the family meant by joining them.

Tomekia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 84 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tomekia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Several short forms come out of it at different cuts and they sound unrelated.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects, so first attempts land.
  • The father's name is visible inside it, which is the point of the build.
What to consider
  • Tomeka, Tameka and Tomika are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
  • No meaning can honestly be given for the ending.
