Where it comes from

The story of Tomasa

Thomas was almost certainly a nickname rather than a birth name — the twin — and the man's actual name is lost. What survives instead is one scene: he is not there when the others see the risen Christ, he says he will not believe it without evidence, and he is given the evidence. English took a phrase out of that and has used it ever since for anyone who wants proof first, which is a hard reputation for a man whose objection was reasonable. The name went everywhere Christianity did, and Spanish made the feminine in the ordinary way. Tomasa was common in Spain and Mexico for centuries and reached American records with families from both.

Meaning

twin

From Aramaic te'oma, a twin. The Greek text of John glosses it with Didymos, the Greek word for the same thing, which is how we know the meaning with certainty rather than by reconstruction. Tomasa is the Spanish feminine, formed from Tomas exactly as Luisa is from Luis.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A meaning that the source text states outright rather than leaving to be reconstructed.
  • A masculine counterpart used in every European language.
  • Three short forms, one of them a proper Spanish diminutive.
What to consider
  • It is strongly represented among the oldest generations in Spain and Mexico and reads as of that time.
  • The English phrase about doubting will be made at some point, usually as a joke.
  • Outside Spanish-speaking families it is heard as a feminine of Thomas and treated as unusual.
