When Finnish national feeling grew in the nineteenth century, families began to give children names made from plain Finnish words instead of saints' names borrowed from Latin and Swedish: Toivo, hope, Rauha, peace, Lempi, love, Sulo, grace. Finnish immigrants brought Toivo to the copper country of Michigan and the iron ranges of Minnesota, where it became a familiar name in mining towns.
