Where it comes from

The story of Tobi

Tobias is the hero of a book that Catholic and Orthodox Bibles include and Protestant ones do not — a story with a dog, an angel and a fish in it. The name and its short forms have been in European use since the Middle Ages. The Yoruba Tobi is entirely separate: Yoruba names are often long sentences about God, and Tobi is what daily speech keeps of them. Both reach American records.

Meaningscholars disagree

the Lord is good, or great

Hebrew Toviyah joins a word for good to a form of the divine name, giving Tobias and its short forms. Separately, Yoruba Tobi is a shortening of names such as Oluwatobiloba and carries the sense of greatness. The two are unrelated and both are widely used.

Tobi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2023, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tobi went to 31 boys in 2025, but Toby is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 265, which makes it the 672nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,911 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 6,446 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 55,099 for Tobi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two documented ancestries, Hebrew and Yoruba, both real.
  • Four letters and two syllables, very quick to write.
  • Tobias stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
What to consider
  • Toby is the standard English spelling and will be written for him.
  • It is used for both sexes in Yoruba naming, so forms may guess wrong.
  • It reads as a nickname in English, which may matter on a formal document.
