Tobe
Masculine · “the Lord is good”
Tobe is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 949 boys against 29 girls since 1880.
Tobe is a short form of a name from a book that half of Christendom does not have. The book is a good story — a dog, a journey, a fish, an angel traveling incognito — and whether it is scripture depends entirely on which bible is on the table.

Where it comes from
From A Hebrew compound gives the name Tobiah, then Greek Tobias to Tobe
The story of Tobe
The book of Tobit is in Catholic and Orthodox bibles and not in Protestant ones — it sits among the books that Jerome translated with reservations and that the Reformation moved out of scripture and into an appendix, where English-speaking readers met it as Apocrypha or did not meet it at all. That is a real division in what people mean by the bible, and it is the reason a name can be thoroughly biblical to one family and unfamiliar to their neighbors. The story itself is domestic in a way little else in scripture is: a blind father, a son sent on a journey to collect a debt, a dog that comes along for no stated reason, a marriage, a cure made from a fish, and a traveling companion who turns out at the end to have been sent.

the Lord is good
The full name behind it is Tobias, from a Hebrew compound saying that the Lord is good, and the reading is secure for that name. Whether this short form descends from it is less clear: it may equally be a surname used as a given name, or a spelling of Toby that never took the y. Given to a few daughters but nearly always to sons in American records, it sits loose from its parent only in its spelling.
How the name formed

- The book of Tobit is kept in some canons and set aside in others

Fashion outlook
Tobe sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Very short, easy to write and easy for a young child to learn
- A real biblical name behind it, with an unusually good story attached
- Works for a son or a daughter, which the record confirms
- The one-syllable and two-syllable pronunciations both circulate, so introductions have to settle it.
- It will be written Toby by nearly everyone taking the name down from speech.
- The book it comes from is not in every bible, so the name is biblical to some families and simply unfamiliar to others.
