Tino
Masculine
Tino is an ending that became a name. Italian and Spanish are full of names finishing in -tino — Agostino, Martino, Faustino, Valentino, Celestino, Constantino — and the last two syllables of any of them give Tino, which has been a standard affectionate form for centuries and a name in its own right for decades. Its American peak is 1972.

Our story of Tino
Clipping from the back is much rarer than clipping from the front, and Italian does it more than most languages. English takes the front — Robert to Rob, Elizabeth to Liz, William to Will — and only occasionally the back, as in Tony from Anthony. Italian does both freely: Giuseppe gives Beppe and Peppino, Francesco gives Cecco and Franco, and the whole -ino family gives Tino and Nino. Why the back should be available in one language and not another is a real question in the study of names, and the usual answer is stress: Italian words are overwhelmingly stressed on the second-to-last syllable, so the back of the word carries the weight and is worth keeping. English stresses the front, so the front survives. Tino is the Italian pattern arriving in America intact.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The meaning depends entirely on the parent. Agostino gives 'venerable', from Latin augustus. Martino gives 'of Mars'. Faustino gives 'fortunate'. Valentino gives 'strong, healthy'. Constantino gives 'steadfast'. Celestino gives 'heavenly'. Tino inherits whichever of these the family used, and the record does not say. The -ino ending is itself a diminutive, so the name is the tail of a diminutive of a longer name.

The Mick test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mick climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mick's path sketches the road Tino is walking now.
Tino sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, easy in Italian, Spanish and English alike.
- A long list of formal names is available behind it if one is wanted.
- It is warm and short without being childish on an adult.
- The parent name is not recorded, so the meaning question needs a qualifier.
- As a short form on a birth certificate it leaves no formal version in reserve.
- It is close to Nino, Dino and Gino, which are separate names of the same kind.
