Where it comes from

Our story of Tinamarie

Tina is one of the great success stories of detached endings. It was never a name in Latin or in any of the languages that produced the long forms; it was the tail of Christina, Martina, Ernestina, Albertina and half a dozen others, and it came off in Italian and English at about the same period and started standing up on its own. By the middle of the twentieth century it was a full name given to children with no longer version on the certificate, and it is now considerably more common than most of its parents. That happens to endings that are heavy enough to carry stress and open enough to sound like a name, which is a narrow specification and explains why so few of them manage it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The first half is an ending with no meaning of its own, and the second is Mary in its French form, whose Hebrew original has never been securely explained. So one half has no meaning and the other has one that nobody can supply, which is an unusual combination and an honest description.

Pronouncing Tinamarie

TEE-nuh-muh-REE

Four syllables with a stress at each end. The two halves keep their own weight, which is what marks the name as a compound rather than a single word; families who run them together produce three syllables.

Fashion outlook

Tinamarie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are entirely familiar, so the name is understood the instant it is said.
  • Two complete, established names sit inside it and either can be used alone.
  • Written as one word it works as a single name and needs no hyphen.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is a great deal of name and it will be shortened by other people at once.
  • Tina Marie and Tinamarie both exist, so the written form has to be specified.
  • Compound names of this shape are firmly dated to the middle of the last century.
