Where it comes from

The story of Tina

The best-known bearer took the name as a stage name and then had to litigate to keep it. It had been devised for her by a husband who registered it, and when the marriage ended she gave up the money, the property and the royalties in exchange for keeping the two syllables she had been performing under for sixteen years — a trade that looked lopsided at the time and turned out not to be. Another Tina had a shorter and stranger career: a photographer and organizer who documented a revolution, was expelled from one country, fought in a war in another, and died in a taxi in a third at forty-five, with an obituary that argued about her the whole way through.

The ending comes from Latin, where it makes a feminine and often a small one, and it sits at the end of Christina, Martina, Valentina, Albertina and Ernestina. Which of them a particular Tina came from is usually unrecoverable, and by the middle of the last century it was being given directly to children with no long form behind it at all.

Fashion outlook

Tina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and understood without explanation anywhere in the West.
  • It needs no long form and accepts several.
  • It is one of the few short names that works equally at five and at fifty.
What to consider
  • It reads as a short form, so she may be asked what it is short for.
  • The name is strongly associated with particular decades.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well, though it belongs overwhelmingly to the girls.
