The story of Timoteo
The name is Greek and belongs to the world of the early church: Timotheos appears in the New Testament as a young companion of Paul, and two of the letters in the collection are addressed to him. Latin took it as Timotheus, and from there it settled into the Romance languages — Timoteo in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, Timothée in French, Tymoteusz in Polish. It reached the United States mostly with Spanish- and Italian-speaking families, and it has stayed closer to those households than the English form ever did.
Meaning
honoring God
From Greek time, 'honor', and theos, 'god'. Both halves are transparent and the compound has never been in dispute.

tee-mo-TEH-o
Four syllables with the stress on the third. English speakers often move it forward to tee-MO-tee-o; the Spanish and Italian saying keeps it late and lets the final o ring.

The Wilferd test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Timoteo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wilferd climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wilferd's path sketches the road Timoteo is walking now.
Timoteo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- An unbroken record from first-century Greek through Latin into three living languages.
- Timo, Tim and Teo are all ready-made short forms, each belonging to a different language.
- Recognizable to English speakers through Timothy, so it needs no explaining even where it is uncommon.
- In an English-speaking classroom the ending will drift toward Timothy, and holding the final o will take a small effort for life.
- Four syllables is long for a first name that has to carry a surname after it; test the whole thing aloud.
