Tench Tilghman of Maryland served for years as George Washington's aide, and when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Washington sent him to carry the news to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia; he rode for days and arrived exhausted in the middle of the night. His family's name is spelled Tilghman and said TIL-mun, with a gh that has been silent for centuries. Tilmon writes the name exactly as it sounds and leaves the gh out.
