Tijuana
Feminine
Tijuana is a city whose own name nobody can explain. The story everybody tells — that it comes from an aunt called Juana who kept an inn — is folk etymology of the purest kind: it takes a word that sounds like two Spanish words and invents a person to account for it. The likelier source is the language that was spoken there first.

The story of Tijuana
The town exists because of a line drawn in 1848. The treaty that ended the war between the United States and Mexico put the border where it now runs, cutting a single settled region in two and leaving a ranch on the southern side of it; the town was formally founded four decades later and grew because the line was there — first as a customs post, then as a destination for people crossing it. Everything the city has been since is a consequence of its position on that line. A place named for something nobody can translate, in a spot chosen by a treaty, is an unusually literal piece of nineteenth-century history.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The place name appears in Spanish records in several spellings before the aunt story existed, which is the usual sign that the story came afterwards. Proposals from the indigenous language of the region have been offered and none is agreed. As a personal name it carries a place rather than a meaning, and the place's own meaning is unrecovered.
How the name formed
- A place name from before the Spanish records
- A folk story about an aunt attached to it
- A border drawn through the region in 1848
- The city's name taken up as an American first name
Pronouncing Tijuana
tee-WAH-nuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The j is a Spanish one and silent in the English rendering; the misreading that inserts an h sound is common enough to have produced an alternative spelling of the city's name.

Fashion outlook
Tijuana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
