The story of Tighe
Anglicizing an Irish surname was done by ear, by clerks with no Irish, over several centuries and with no standard, so a single original produces a spray of English forms that look unrelated. Mac Taidhg gave Tighe, Tigue, McTigue, Teague, Tye and Montague; O Cathasaigh gave Casey and Cassidy in different families; O Suilleabhain gave Sullivan and Silvan. The Montague case is the striking one, because it converts an Irish patronymic into what looks like a Norman territorial name, and families who made that change generally knew what they were doing. The gh in Tighe is not decoration: it marks a consonant that Irish spelling records and English cannot pronounce, so English readers simply drop it.

Irish tadhg, a poet
Tighe is an anglicization of the Irish O Taidhg or Mac Taidhg, from tadhg, generally read as a poet. The gh is silent and records a sound Irish spelling marks but English does not have. The American peak is 1977.

The Craven test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tighe's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Craven climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Craven's path sketches the road Tighe is walking now.
Tighe sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
