Where it comes from

The story of Tiffiny

Calendar names were once ordinary: Noel and Natalie for Christmas, Pascal and Pascale for Easter, Epiphany for the sixth of January. Most of them are transparent and this one is not, because the wearing-down went so far that nobody could see the feast in it any more. That is probably why it survived — a name that had stopped looking religious could be used by anyone. It faded, came back in the twentieth century attached to a jeweller and a film, and the American record then produced a set of respellings of which this is one, writing the unstressed middle vowel as an i.

Meaning

showing, manifestation

The Greek theophaneia means an appearance of God, and the feast of the Epiphany is named from it. Medieval English wore Theophania down to Tiffania and then Tiffany.

Fashion outlook

Tiffiny sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Said aloud it is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
  • Tiff is a ready short form used across the whole family.
  • The name has a documented medieval history that almost nobody carrying it knows about.
What to consider
  • Tiffany is the standard spelling and will be written instead, every time.
  • It is heavily generation-marked to the nineteen-eighties.
  • A jewelry firm owns the word in most people's minds.
