From a Greek word for the feast of the Epiphany to Tiffiney
The story of Tiffiney
Clara Driscoll ran the women's glass-cutting department at the Tiffany studios and designed the dragonfly, wisteria and peony shades that are now the most famous objects the firm made. Company practice was to credit the founder, so her name appeared nowhere; she had to leave when she married, which was the rule for the women in her department. In the early years of this century a pair of researchers found hundreds of her letters home, describing the designs in detail as she made them, and the attribution of an entire body of work changed on the strength of family correspondence that had sat in an attic.
Meaning
the showing forth of God
The name descends from a Greek compound used for the feast of the Epiphany, and it was given in medieval England and France to girls born around that date. It went out of use for centuries and came back in the twentieth as a jewelry shop and then as a name, by which point nobody could hear the medieval word inside it. This spelling adds an extra vowel to a name that already has three unstressed syllables, none of which carries any information.
How the name formed
- a Greek word for the feast of the Epiphany
- given to medieval girls born at that season
- out of use for centuries and revived as a shop name
- the lamps are made in a women's department and credited to the founder
- Tiffiney appears among the American spellings in the 1960s

Fashion outlook
Tiffiney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
