Tifany with one f looks like a shortcut and is actually a step towards the older spelling. The name is medieval, it came into English from French, and French has never doubled that letter. The double f is the English addition, not the other way round.

Where it comes from

The story of Tifany

The French form is Tiphaine, and its most substantial medieval bearer was a scholar. Tiphaine de Raguenel, a Breton noblewoman of the fourteenth century, had a reputation for learning in astronomy and astrology at a time when the two were one subject and the subject was taken seriously by commanders. She married Bertrand du Guesclin, who became Constable of France and the most effective soldier of his generation, and the chroniclers report that he consulted her on the timing of campaigns. Whether that is fact or the kind of story that attaches itself to a famous man's clever wife is not something the sources will settle. What is certain is that the name was ordinary enough in medieval Brittany to belong to a real woman with a real library, several centuries before anyone thought of it as a modern American invention.

Meaning

appearance of God

The name is the Greek word Theophania in worn-down form: the showing-forth of God, which is the feast the church keeps in early January. Girls born around that feast were named for it, and centuries of French and English mouths reduced the four-syllable Greek to two. The meaning is agreed and the route is documented. What varies is only how many f's the middle of the name carries, and that varies by language.

How the name formed

  1. Greek Theophania names the feast of the showing-forth of God
  2. French wears it down to Tiphaine and gives it to girls born near the feast
  3. English takes it as Tiffany and doubles the f
  4. American records carry the single-f spelling alongside it

Pronouncing Tifany

TIFF-uh-nee

Three syllables with the stress at the front. The single f makes no difference to the sound — English does not lengthen consonants — though a reader meeting the spelling cold may briefly try a long first vowel, TIE-fany, before the familiar name asserts itself.

Tifany sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1982, with 66 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tifany sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuinely medieval name, whatever its modern reputation suggests
  • The sound is completely familiar and needs no explanation to anyone
  • The spelling is closer to the French original than the standard English one
What to consider
  • The double-f spelling dominates so heavily that this one will be corrected for life.
  • The name is firmly associated with a particular American decade, and that association arrives before any medieval history does.
  • A single f invites the assumption of a mistake rather than a choice, which is the reverse of the truth here.
