Tien
Masculine · “to advance (Tiến)”
Tien is given to both — 814 boys and 506 girls since 1880. See Tien as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Tien is how English writes two different Vietnamese names once their accent marks are gone: Tiến, a boys' name meaning to advance, and Tiên, a girls' name meaning a fairy or an immortal. That is why a single American spelling serves both boys and girls.

The story of Tien
Both names came to the United States with Vietnamese families in the late twentieth century, and on American forms their accent marks are usually dropped, and with them the difference between the two. The result is one spelling for two names, leaning to boys but not settled there. The four letters have a life of their own elsewhere, too: in Dutch, tien is the everyday word for ten, said like 'teen,' so a Dutch reader meets the name as a number first.

to advance (Tiến), or fairy, immortal (Tiên)
Two names share this spelling. Tiến, 'to advance, to make progress,' is given mainly to boys. Tiên, 'fairy, immortal,' is given mainly to girls and appears in compounds such as Thủy Tiên, the narcissus flower, literally 'water fairy.' Only the family knows which one a given Tien carries.

The Filemon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tien's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Filemon climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Filemon's path sketches the road Tien is walking now.
Tien sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short, four letters, and easy to spell once heard.
- Carries a real Vietnamese meaning for a boy or a girl.
- Rare in the United States, so it will seldom be shared.
- Without its marks, no one outside the family can tell which of the two names is meant; the marked spelling can be kept wherever a form allows it.
- English speakers tend to flatten it to 'teen,' which loses the Vietnamese sound.
- It leans to boys without settling there, so either child may be assumed to be the other; a girl called Tien is carrying a different name from a boy called Tien.
