Where it comes from

Our story of Thermon

The Greek syllable this name begins with is the word for heat, and the most famous place carrying it is a pass in central Greece: Thermopylae, the hot gates, named for the sulphur springs that come out of the hillside there. The springs are the reason the place has a name at all, and they are still running — visitors can smell them before they see the monument. The pass itself has changed beyond recognition. In the battle everyone remembers, the road between the mountain and the sea was narrow enough that a small force could hold it; silt from the river has pushed the coastline several kilometres away since, so the battlefield is now an inland plain. The hot gates are still hot, and they are no longer a gate.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is documented. Therman and Thurman are both in the record at the same time, and Thurman is a genuine surname; this spelling may be either of them altered, or a build of its own. The Greek word for heat is visible in it but there is no evidence anyone intended it.

Thermon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Thermon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is genuinely rare without being unpronounceable: every letter does what English expects.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the standard shape for a man's name in English.
  • It has no living associations at all, which leaves the name entirely to the child.
What to consider
  • Therman and Thurman will both be written for it.
  • The first syllable calls up flasks and thermostats for most readers.
  • No origin is documented, so there is nothing to answer when the meaning is asked for.
