Where it comes from

Our story of Theotis

Otis, the piece the ending most resembles, has a history of its own that almost nobody knows. It is an English surname from a medieval given name, Ode or Otes, a form of the Norman Odo — the same name as the bishop who was William the Conqueror's half-brother and who appears, club in hand, in the Bayeux Tapestry. Odo faded; his name survived as a surname; the surname became an American first name and then, in this name and others like it, a syllable available for building with. That is the ordinary life cycle of a name in English, and Theotis sits at the end of it, made from two pieces that had each already traveled a thousand years to get within reach of each other.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is the Greek theos, god, which stands at the head of Theodore, Theophilus and a hundred other names. The ending matches Otis, Curtis and Travis, all of them English surnames. But a name is not the sum of its syllables, and no source records Theotis as a compound anybody built deliberately. The honest reading is that it was made from familiar parts, which is a real origin even when it is not a translation.

Fashion outlook

Theotis sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It contains two strong, familiar names and can be shortened to either of them.
  • It sounds formal and substantial without being difficult for anyone to say.
  • It is genuinely rare while using no sound a stranger would stumble over.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Theodore or Otis and corrected to one of them regularly.
  • The name is closely tied to a particular American era and region.
  • No dictionary holds it, so the meaning he is offered will have been made up by whoever offered it.
