Thedore drops the o that carries the first half of the compound. Theodore is two Greek words joined at that vowel, God and gift; removing it welds the halves together and makes the join impossible to see, which is a lot of work for one letter.

Where it comes from

The story of Thedore

The American president of this name loathed the short form. Theodore Roosevelt is on record several times objecting to Teddy, which he considered undignified and which his family did not use; his wife called him Theodore and close friends called him T. R. Everybody else called him Teddy for the whole of his public life, and after a hunting trip on which he refused to shoot a tethered bear, a cartoonist drew it, a shopkeeper made a stuffed one, and the toy took the nickname he disliked and made it permanent in every language on earth.

Meaning

Gift of God

Greek theos, God, and doron, a gift, in that order. The joining vowel between them is the o that this spelling removes, and it is there because Greek compounds need one. Dorothea is the same two words the other way round, which is one of the neatest facts in European naming.

Three syllables with the stress at the front. The missing o is supplied by the reader, since the consonants left behind cannot be said together; the spelling is shorter and the name is not.

Fashion outlook

Thedore sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Theo and Ted are two short forms that are both entirely current.
  • The meaning is transparent, positive and easy to give a child.
  • The name is recognizable across Greek, Russian and Spanish use.
What to consider
  • Theodore is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
  • The missing letter makes the compound invisible, so the meaning has to be explained.
  • It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
