But a Roman jurist recorded a competing theory that it came instead from terrere, to frighten, on the grounds that a territory is the area within which a magistrate has the power to frighten people off. Modern etymologists mostly prefer the earth derivation and note that the frightening one may have influenced the spelling. It is a rare case of an ancient source preserving an etymological argument rather than just an answer, and the second theory has the advantage of describing what a border actually does.
