Our story of Terrin
In French a terrine is an earthenware dish, from terre, earth, and the food cooked in it. English borrowed the word twice. Once it kept the French spelling for the dish of pâté; once it changed it to tureen, as if the soup bowl had come from the Italian city of Turin, which it had not. Terrin sounds like the first of those, and it shares the root of terrain and territory. It is a name built from sound, and the sound happens to be the earth.
