Terrace spells a men's name as an ordinary English noun, and nothing in the record says whether the family meant the word or simply wrote down what they heard. The noun itself has drifted far enough apart on the two sides of the Atlantic that it now names two different things.

Our story of Terrace
A terrace began as a bank of heaped earth, and in Britain the word went one way while in America it went another. British builders in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries put up rows of identical houses along a raised walk and called the row a terrace, and the word stuck to the row rather than the walk: a terraced house in Britain is a house in a row, sharing walls, which is how most British cities are built and which has nothing to do with height. American usage kept closer to the original and attached the word to the raised flat surface itself — the paved area behind a house, the roof platform on an apartment building, the stepped bank on a hillside farm. Two centuries of separate development have left one word doing two jobs, and a British and an American reader picture different things on hearing it.

Not established
Read as a respelling, it stands on a Roman family name whose own meaning has never been established. Read as the English word, it means a raised level place. The record contains both readings and no way to choose, and there is no evidence that anyone intended the word.
Pronouncing Terrace
TERR-us
Two syllables with the stress at the front, exactly as the English word. The longer men's name it respells has the stress at the front too, so nothing is lost.

Fashion outlook
Terrace sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Every reader knows the word, so nobody has to be taught the spelling or the sound.
- Terry comes off it as a ready-made short form.
- Two syllables with front stress is easy to say quickly and clearly.
- Terrence and Terrance are the standard spellings and both will be written for it.
- It is an ordinary noun, and readers will notice before they notice the name.
- Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
Nobody names a baby alone.
