The story of Tayte
The Danelaw — the part of England under Scandinavian control from the ninth century — left a substantial layer of Norse personal names and vocabulary behind, and Tate is one of the survivors. It became a common English surname, particularly in the north, and the Tate Gallery in London carries it from the sugar merchant who founded it. Its use as a given name is modern and American, rising from the 1990s alongside other short one-syllable surname names — Cole, Blake, Reid, Chase, Tate. The respellings followed.
Meaning
cheerful, glad
Old Norse teitr means cheerful or glad, and it was used as a byname and then a personal name in Scandinavia and in the Norse-settled parts of England. The English surname Tate descends from it. The derivation is settled. A separate possibility for some English Tates is Old English tat, of uncertain meaning, but the Norse route is the standard one.
