Where it comes from

Our story of Tawnie

English has very few native color words — red, white, black, green, yellow, blue and brown, and that is nearly all of them. Everything more specific was borrowed, and mostly from French: tawny, russet, maroon, beige, mauve, scarlet, vermilion, crimson, azure. The reason is trade. Cloth and dye came from France and Italy, and the words for the colors came with the goods, which is why the fine distinctions in English are all imported and the basic ones are all native. Color names given to children follow the same split: Scarlett, Amber and this one are borrowings; nobody is called Brown.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The color word means a warm brownish gold and came from a French word about tanning leather. Whether a particular bearer was named from the color, from a respelled Tanya, or from the sound alone cannot be established.

Tawnie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 45 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tawnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and easy at any age.
  • The color behind it is specific and pleasant.
  • The spelling is read correctly on sight.
What to consider
  • Tawny, Tahnee and Tawna are all in the record and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The word is still an ordinary adjective, which some bearers enjoy and others do not.
  • The -ie ending dates the spelling to a particular stretch.
