These are current, ordinary names in Zimbabwe today. The American Tawandas came from somewhere else. They appear in the record in the middle of the twentieth century, part of a wave of names assembled from a front syllable and a familiar ending, in the same decades and often the same families as Tamika, Tanisha and Tawana. No documented line connects the two, and it would be a small dishonesty to claim one. What is true is that a Tawanda in Harare and a Tawanda in Detroit write their name the same way.
