Where it comes from

The story of Tarrance

Publius Terentius Afer, whose third name means the African, was born around 190 BC, probably in Carthage, brought to Rome as a slave, educated by the senator Terentius Lucanus and freed by him, taking his patron's family name as freedmen did. He wrote six comedies before dying in his mid-twenties on a journey to Greece. Their Latin was so clean that they became the schoolroom text of the entire Latin-teaching tradition, read by Cicero, copied by monks, staged by convents in the tenth century and set for schoolboys into the nineteenth. One of his lines, that nothing human is foreign to me, has been quoted for two thousand years, usually without any idea of who wrote it or how he came to Rome.
