Our story of Taria
A ria is a coastal inlet formed when the sea floods a river valley, and geographers took the word from Galicia, where the Rías Baixas and Rías Altas cut deep into the coast and shelter some of the most productive shellfish grounds in Europe. The distinction from a fjord matters: a fjord is a glacial trough drowned by the sea and has a U-shaped cross-section and often a shallow sill at its mouth, while a ria is a river valley drowned by rising sea level and keeps the V-shape and the branching pattern of the river system that made it. Devon and Cornwall are full of them. The word entered English geological writing in the nineteenth century and is one of a handful of Spanish loans in the technical vocabulary of landforms, alongside mesa, playa, arroyo and caldera.

No source is documented. Both pieces are free American elements that were in wide circulation when the name appeared, and the geographical term is a coincidence of spelling. The record holds the name for children of both sexes, which is what happens when nothing in it marks one.

Fashion outlook
Taria sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Ria detaches cleanly and is a complete name across several languages.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to write and spell aloud.
- Tarian, Taria and Tariah are all recorded and will be written for it.
- Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
- Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
