Where it comes from

Our story of Taralyn

Between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen hundred and two a group called the British Israelites dug trenches across the Hill of Tara. Their theory was that the Israelites of the lost tribes had reached Ireland and buried the Ark of the Covenant there, and they had leased the land and begun cutting into the earthworks. They found nothing but some Roman coins, and they did a good deal of damage to a monument complex that had been in use for four thousand years. Yeats, Maud Gonne and Arthur Griffith went to the site and protested in person; Yeats wrote a letter to the papers, and Gonne is said to have lit a bonfire on the hill and sung while the diggers worked. The excavation was eventually stopped. The trenches are still visible.

The front is an Irish hill name whose own etymology is argued over, and there is no evidence that American families took it from there rather than from the film that made it famous. The ending is a free element with no content. Nothing records the join.

Fashion outlook

Taralyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tara detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Taralynn, Terralyn and Tarilyn are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The first vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • The ending carries no meaning, so only half the name has anything to report.
