Where it comes from

Our story of Taniah

The name had an odd stretch of American visibility. A kidnapped heiress, photographed with a rifle in front of a seven-headed snake, announced that she had taken the name Tania after a woman who had fought in Bolivia — and for a year and a half the name was on the front of every newspaper in the country, attached to one of the strangest stories of the decade. Whatever parents thought of it, they heard it constantly. The h on the end belongs to a different pattern altogether: from the nineteen-eighties onward American spellings added a terminal h to names ending in a vowel by the thousand, borrowed from the look of Hebrew and Arabic transliteration and doing, in English, no work at all.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Tania is the Russian short form of Tatiana, which descends from a Roman family name of Sabine origin whose meaning is not recoverable. So the chain runs back to a word nobody can translate, and the added h at the end contributes nothing further.

Fashion outlook

Taniah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and instantly sayable by anyone.
  • It carries a genuine Russian name behind it for families who want one.
  • It shortens cleanly to a name that stands alone.
What to consider
  • Tania, Tanya and Taniyah are all in use and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The silent h marks the spelling as belonging to a particular decade.
  • In Russian the base name is a familiar form rather than a formal one.
