The tangerine is named after Tangier, and it reached Europe only in the nineteenth century. Small loose-skinned citrus fruit came west through Morocco and took the port's name in English, which is why the fruit has a place name and the orange does not.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tangie

Citrus fruit is almost entirely a set of hybrids, and the family tree has only been worked out recently. There are about three wild ancestors, the citron, the pomelo and the mandarin, and everything else in a fruit bowl is a cross between them or a cross between crosses: the sweet orange is a mandarin and a pomelo, the lemon is a citron and a sour orange, the grapefruit is a pomelo and a sweet orange. The tangerine is a mandarin, arriving in Europe by a route that gave it a name from a port rather than from a plant. So the fruit this name resembles is a variety of a wild species, named after a city in Morocco, and its resemblance to an American girl's name is a coincidence twice over.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source and no meaning for the name. It resembles the fruit and there is no reason to think it comes from it; the shape belongs to the American tradition of building names from a front syllable and a pet ending. Books that supply a meaning are working from the resemblance.

Pronouncing Tangie

TAN-jee

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The g is soft because of the following e, which is the ordinary English rule; a spelling with a y would leave it ambiguous.

Fashion outlook

Tangie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and easy for a child to say and to write.
  • Angie is a fully established short form sitting in the back half.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English.
What to consider
  • It will be connected to the fruit by everybody, which is a coincidence.
  • Tangy and Tangi both exist and will be written instead.
  • There is no meaning to give a child who asks.
